The Wave is Not the Water

This immersive garden of light, space and sound invites a moment of stillness amid the noise of contemporary life. Created through cymatics – the visualisation of sound through vibrations in fluids or powders – the work transforms sound into shifting patterns of light. Inspired by W. B. Yeats’s image of the mind as still water, it offers a space to breathe, listen and become attentive.

The composition brings together throat singing, Tibetan singing bowls, Solfeggio tones and musical intervals informed by Pythagorean ratios. These interwoven sounds encourage slower breathing and a sense of balance, drawing the listener into a shared environment of contemplation.

Beneath its sensory beauty lies a question about how we live together. Against the aggression, public judgement and self-promotion of social media, the work considers the value of quiet attention, community and collective responsibility. Its title evokes ripples on the surface of matter: visible disturbances that reveal little of the depth beneath. These become a metaphor for conspicuous online activism, asking what separates the performance of concern from meaningful engagement.
