The Inheritance
Composed from thousands of photographs of light, this moving-image work is an audiovisual poem about freedoms inherited, forgotten and placed at risk. Through shifting reflections, colour becomes argument: pink honours the women whose struggles expanded the possibilities for those who followed; red carries their anger as hard-won rights are mistaken for permanent conditions; black, pierced by sparks, imagines that inheritance unravelled and old battles fought anew.
The work explores disinheritance as something we may choose without recognising it: through innocence, naivety, certainty or performative virtue. It considers how good intentions can obscure consequences, and how the pursuit of liberation may turn against itself. What do we owe those who secured our freedoms? And when we wish for change, do we understand what we stand to lose?
